US jobs – Don’t believe all the hype

After hitting rock bottom in April, the economy has really rebounded in the United States and over the last two months, the US has created over 7.5 million jobs. Now, that’s a fantastic outcome. That’s, I think, far better than anyone could really have hoped possible, back in March, when we were at the height of the pandemic fears.

Officially, there are 17.75 million Americans classified as unemployed. To be classified as unemployed, ordinarily, you have to be actively searching for work today. Yet the rules for claiming unemployment benefit have actually been relaxed, and today you don’t need to be searching for work to be able to claim those benefits. Therefore, we need to look at that number. And that figure is actually 31.5 million people.
