On the face of it, the US economy appears to be doing pretty well. But there are still real concerns about jobs and inflation, and thankfully for an economist like ING's James Knightley, we're now getting real data again after the government shutdown ended. The Fed will be pleased too - we still narrowly favour a rate cut in December

The real state of the US economy

We're starting to get the big economic numbers out of the US now the government shutdown has finally ended. Thursday, we get the first jobs report since September. And there are real concerns about the employment situation, and it's why we narrowly favour a US rate cut in December. But the Fed is also worried about inflationary effects. And ING's James Knightley says the inflation report on the morning of 10 December may well be pivotal to the rate decision due just hours later.
