Germany: Two tales of one economy

Benchmarking the German economy at the start of the election campaign.

Executive summary

At the start of the German election campaign, Carsten Brzeski, ING's Chief Economist for Germany, looked at the economic benchmarks which could be key for who wins the federal poll on 24 September 2017.

Carsten looks at the German 'golden cycle' which doesn't seem to want to end. But he also assessed the dark sides of the 'Wirtschaftswunder' or economic miracle. He argues there are areas where the next German government could be doing far more, not least reforming the labour market, the education system and investing in modern infrastructure. He also examines where the parties stood as the election campaign kicked off.
